This 4 week course is for those who are comfortable shooting 35mm film but have no previous experience in a black & white darkroom. Throughout the course, an instructor will guide you through the basics of darkroom processes, while focusing on your goals within the medium. Topics covered include processing black & white film, contact printing, and enlargement printing. Participants must bring an exposed but unprocessed roll of film to work with for the first class. All other materials for this course are available through EBPCO! Includes a one month limited membership to the EBPCO Darkroom.

PHOTO ZINE MAKING - SUNDAY, JANUARY 5TH - 3-6PM - HELD AT OAKLAND PHOTO WORKSHOP BY JAYA BHAT

If you think a zine is just a printed pamphlet, get ready to open your mind! In this one day workshop, a variety of zine making techniques will be presented, ranging from the more “traditional” to the most unexpected and experimental formats. You’ll get a taste of what goes into digital zine layouts as well as getting hands-on with your own DIY zine mock up.  Participants are invited to bring a variety of their own printed images that they are interested in putting into a zine. All other materials for this workshop are provided by EBPCO.

DARKROOM REFRESHER - SATURDAY, JANUARY 11th - 10AM - 2PM - AT EBPCO DARKROOM

This one-day session is designed for those who have had some previous experience in black & white photography, processing, and printing but have been away from it for some time. We will go through the process of black & white film processing and darkroom printing together as a refresher to these hands-on procedures. Participants must bring an exposed but unprocessed roll of film to work with for the class. All other materials for this course are provided by EBPCO!

POLAROID MANIPULATION - SUNDAY, JANUARY 19TH - 12-4:30PM - HELD AT EBPCO DARKROOM BY SAKARA BIRDSONG

In this one-day workshop, participants will learn methods for manipulating and transferring Polaroid film. This includes transferring an image onto paper or glass and working to create collages out of polaroids with these materials. We’ll also learn how to safely experiment with everyday chemicals found in the pantry to create unconventional polaroid images. Participants are asked to bring a polaroid camera as well as some film (600 or I-type). All other materials are provided by EBPCO.

BREW YOUR OWN FILM DEVELOPER: CAFFENOL - SUNDAY, JANUARY 26TH - 10:30-2PM - HELD AT EBPCO DARKROOM BY BEATRICE THORNTON

We’re partnering with local roaster Rasa Caffe to source some beautiful coffee for participants in this workshop to enjoy in two different ways: as a delicious warm beverage AND ALSO as a developer base for black & white film processing! In this one-day workshop, participants will learn the basics of film processing with homemade Caffenol developer. Participants must bring two rolls of exposed 35mm black & white film to process during the workshop. All other materials are provided by EBPCO, including a cup of Rasa Caffe coffee!

ADVANCED DARKROOM PRINTING - TWO DAY - MONDAY, FEB 3rd & WEDNESDAY, FEB 5th - 6-9:30pm - HELD AT EBPCO DARKROOM BY VINCE DONOVAN

This two day advanced workshop is reserved for registered users of the EBPCO darkroom who want to take their printing to the next level. You'll learn techniques to work more efficiently and effectively in the darkroom to get consistently good prints with vivid blacks, rich mid-tones, and sparkling highlights! Participants must bring a selection of negatives and darkroom prints made at the EBPCO darkroom to the first class. All other materials for this course are provided by EBPCO!

SALT PRINTING - SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 9th - 12-3 - HELD AT EBPCO DARKROOM BY ANNE STURGEON

Salt printing is a photographic printing process dating back to the mid 1800’s that uses table salt and silver nitrate to produce a light sensitive emulsion. In this one-day workshop, learn the basics of this historical process, including how to make and coat your light sensitive emulsion on paper and expose with UV light, leaving you with a rich brown salt print made from a digital negative. Participants must send in images prior to the workshop for negative printing. All other materials for this workshop are provided by EBPCO.

DR. PHILM CAMERA REPAIR - SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 22nd - 11AM-1PM - HELD AT OAKLAND PHOTO WORKSHOP BY PHILP KRAYNA

Do you have a film camera sitting in your closet or collecting dust in an attic, inherited from a relative or borrowed from a friend, or recently purchased at a yard sale or on eBay? Bring your cameras and question to this informal workshop where we will share with others and with EPBCO member and film camera obsessive Philip Krayna (aka “Dr. Philm). Philip will test and assess your camera, if possible help with minor repairs, and explain how to use it, so you can start enjoying the magic of film photography.

MATTING & FRAMING - SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 23rd - 3-6PM - HELD AT OAKLAND PHOTO WORKSHOP BY JENNY SAMPSON AND JAN WATTEN

Learn the importance and the basics of framing and presenting your photographic work. This workshop will cover frame styles, colors and sizes; mat colors and borders; mat vs. no mat; glazing options (glass vs. plexi); finishing (hardware/wires, etc.) and how to present your work at portfolio reviews. Cutting windows in mat board will be demonstrated and attendees will have the opportunity to try cutting their own mat windows. Glass cutting can be demonstrated if there is interest and time.

INTRO TO 35MM FILM PHOTOGRAPHY - SATURDAY, MARCH 1st - 1-4pm - HELD AT EBPCO DARKROOM

For those who own a 35mm SLR camera and want to learn how to get the most out of it. In this course, an instructor will guide you through the basics of manual camera function and making images with black & white 35mm film, including ISO, aperture, shutter speed, light metering, focus, and more. This workshop will get you making images that can be sent out for processing or prepare you for your own processing work in the darkroom. Participants must bring their own 35mm camera.

INTRO TO DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY - SUNDAY, MARCH 2nd - 3-6PM - HELD AT OAKLAND PHOTO WORKSHOP BY KELLY SULLIVAN

For those who own a digital camera and want to learn how to get the most out of it. In this workshop, an instructor will guide you through the basics of digital camera function and making images in manual. This workshop will give you a deeper understanding of your camera's modes and functions as well as a greater sense of control over your image making. Participants must bring their own DSLR or mirrorless camera, batteries, and memory card for file storage.

PHYTOGRAM PRINTING - MARCH 22nd - 12-3pm - HELD AT EBPCO DARKROOM BY BRENNA HANSEN

Phytograms are images that result from the chemical reaction between plants, photo sensitive material, and UV light. Learn the fundamentals of the process and experiment with a variety of methods including printing on photo paper and film. These aren’t your everyday photograms: we’ll be using a homemade developer to prepare herbs, weeds, and other plant material to create unique compositions using selective development. Participants can bring their own plant material as well as experiment with a selection we’ll provide. All other materials are provided by EBPCO!

DARKROOM PRINT FINISHING - MARCH 30th - 1-4pm - HELD AT EBPCO DARKROOM BY JYOTI LIGGIN

Get that pile of black & white darkroom prints out of the box in your closet! In this one day workshop, an instructor will guide you through a variety of darkroom print finishing techniques. Topics covered include hand-retouching (aka spotting), pressing, and dry-mounting prints. Bring your own darkroom prints to work with for this workshop or use some of ours. All other materials for this workshop are provided by EBPCO!

WINTER CRITIQUE SESSION - THURSDAY, MARCH 13th - 6-8:30pm - HELD AT OAKLAND PHOTO WORKSHOP - FACILITATED BY BOB SHONKOFF - WINTER SESSION LEADER TBD

NEW! Join us to present and discuss work made by our photo community. The goals of these in-person sessions are to create a space for our community to give and receive feedback on their projects and works in progress. Participants will learn and practice speaking about their art as well as the art of others, developing skills to make the transition from creating art to presenting it. We strongly encourage participants in our workshops to attend and share what you made! This critique group is open to EBPCO members only. If you’re not a member yet, signing up is easy and you can do so HERE.

Workshop Policies

East Bay Photo Collective reserves the right to cancel any workshop due to low enrollment. If a workshop is canceled, participants will be notified immediately and will receive a complete refund of all workshop fees.

Participants may cancel their registration up to 7 days prior to the workshop date for a full refund; participants canceling with fewer than 7 day’s notice will not receive a refund of any kind. Email us at workshops@ebpco.org to cancel a workshop.

UPDATES TO CANCELLATION POLICY: Beginning December 1st, 2024, EBPCO will retain a $10 administrative fee on ALL cancellations by participants cancelling prior to 7 days of the workshop start date. Cancellations by participants occurring within 7 days of the workshop start date will not receive a refund of any kind.
